Travel & Stay

By car

Enschede is close to the eastern border of the Netherlands with Germany, about an hour and a half drive from Amsterdam (±160 kilometres/±100 miles). Because of that, the city represents a central position and forms a natural link between the Netherlands and Germany. Germany’s most important industrial area, the Ruhr District, is merely 100 kilometres away (±62 miles). Alongside what the city of Enschede itself has to offer, it offers the ideal position for a combined (business) visit to the Netherlands and Germany.

Enschede is situated along two major access roads, namely the A35 and the A1, making it easy to reach from every direction. The A1 is one of the main transit roads to Germany. In comparison to cities in the west of the Netherlands, it takes little to no time to reach the city centre in Enschede.

By train

The Central Station, the Enschede railway station is situated in a late 40s building in downtown Enschede. The Dutch Railways offer direct connections from Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport, Rotterdam and Den Haag. From other large towns you can travel with just one transfer. Enschede also has a direct connection to the German railway system, so can be easily reached from that direction as well.

For international travellers from Germany and other countries to the East of the Netherlands though, traveling to the nearby city of Hengelo is often the better option. Hengelo is one of the stops on the high speed railway connection between Berlin and Amsterdam. Getting to Enschede by international connection, with a single transfer in Hengelo (10 minutes to Enschede from there) is often the faster and more affordable option compared to the direct line to Enschede.

From Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, the Dutch Railways offers a direct connection to Enschede. The railway station is located under Schiphol Airport and in only two hours you will quickly travel to Enschede. You can also travel by the nearby German airport of Dusseldorf.

For travel by flight + train, the recommended options are either Amsterdam Schiphol or Dusseldorf. Schiphol has a great direct direct train connection to Enschede making things easy. Dusseldorf offers more competitive pricing, but has a less optimal public transport connection to Enschede. A similar thing applies to traveling in from Eindhoven airport.
